The next area that grew over the past year is general merchandise stores, part of the private service industry. This segment added 400 jobs from last year, increasing by 6.2 percent. The wholesale trade segment, also included in the private service industry, experienced a growth rate of 6.0 percent while adding 500 jobs over the last year. There were indeed some areas that did not experience job growth, but administration and support, general merchandise stores and wholesale trade created employment opportunities for job seekers.
There are some major employers in the area that contribute to the local economy and create opportunities by offering Bakersfield jobs. Many of the large employers are in the health care industry, and they include nursing positions, physician, and administration jobs. Bakersfield Memorial Hospital, Kern Medical, Mercy Hospitals of Bakersfield and Ridgecrest Regional Hospitalare some of the larger employers in Bakersfield. Outside of the health care industry, Chevron Corp and Ensign United States Drilling are two larger employers that often have Bakersfield jobs available.
